It may be difficult for you but it is worse for them as they will miss him terribly. Memories are all you can give and are very precious. They may cry at the time but it will give them something to look back on with pleasure.

You could tell them that you feel guilty, they will tell you to stop being silly. They know that it isn't your fault.

Don't feel guilty about seeing your sons. Cherish them, don't ever take it forgranted..EVER! There isn't much you can say to the family, they will have to grieve in their own way. Just offer your support, tell them your sorry. And listen to them.

just be honest with them tell them you are so sorry for their loss and is there anything you can do, tell them little funny stories about him and answer any questions they may have that is all you can do
