Yes you do need a credit card plus two forms of ID (i.e. Utility bills, passport, etc.) The mobile phone company will do a credit check on your credit history before they let you take out a contract with them.

You dont HAVE to have either, all you need is proof of ID (passport, recognised ID card etc.) 2 proofs of address and a lost of where you haved lived for at least the last 3 years, this is for the credit check that will be performed against your name, There are two main credit scoring companies Equifax and CCN (formerly Experian) If there is a problem with your credit history you can contact them and get a full record of all details they hold on your name or address for the princely sum of two pounds, you can then find out why you wont get a contract phone and endeavour to correct the matter, having said that, the more credit you have that is paid up to date, i.e credit cards, store cards, hire purchase, the better your credit score will be, they also take into account any bad debts you may have, and whether you have been refused credit in the past for any reason, and the amount of times you attempt to get credit and fail is also a black mark against your name, easiest way to start a credit history, get a catalogue like grattan, or any other mail order company, that gives you a credit history and theyre a bit more lenient on newbies to the credit scene, dont go out and get a credit card just to get a phone, it will land you in debt immediately due to the interest rates etc. hope thats helped and good luck.

It also depends where you go. I went to Phones 4u and they did a credit check with a debit card they took £1 off and £1 back on. But the card needs to be active could use a credit card too if you have 1. But I would take other forms of id as well just as back up.

I can't understand why i can't get a loan or a credit card but can get a mobile phone contract.

You need a credit rating! A good one preferably!! If you have never had a credit card or have never taken out a loan you will most likely have no history of credit and thus will be difficult to get a contract phone. However if you get a credit card - you don't have to use it - this will put you on the credit list. However you don't need to have a credit card or driving license, if you have a credit history! But you do need to provide proof of who you are - something with your age (so passport, birth certificate, or drivers license) and you need to provide 2 proofs of you address (e.g. bank statement, bill, etc)

if you want to get a contract offline the you need TWO the following:

- Credit/Debit card
- Driving/Provisional license
- Bank statement
- Utility Bill
- Passport

If you want to get a contract online (from the Internet) then all you need is a debit card.

You can compare online mobile phone contracts here:

The 12month free contracts i think are the best.

Hope this help!
