Draw anything you see. Go into your backyard and find things to draw. Draw your hand or foot or thumb! Look in the mirror; do a self-portrait.
Try this book--one of the great ones, just published: "Keys to Drawing with Imagination" by Bert Dodson (an artist who a few years back wrote one of the best books on drawing every published "Keys to Drawing"). You can get the one on Imagination-drawing at amazon.com:

well iluv to draw right now and im in the process of buliding a portfolio for college. i do draw best from drawing form something i mostly draw from life. do you like reproductions like workd from other artists becaues those are always fun. and if you like drawing landscapes and barns and stuff i think it will be best and a great experience if you draw from life and draw what you see because it is more fullfilling and harder but at the end you would have a beautiful drawing and you will be proud of urself at the end when you accomplished something difficult

Hey! *waves* You sound just like me! (Pleez pleez pleez answer mine? Pretty please? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Av_sHVy9F7eOD_mWwFNuhfTsy6IX?qid=20061208142612AA4d0un)

Well, I better stop getting too excited. Anyways, I'm just the same way because I draw horrendous UNLESS I'm sketching something. I have to always look at things, you know, to get the shapes and edges right. Otherwise I'm not even drawing. I doodle.

Recently I found this perfectly wonderful drawing aid video on youtube. I oughtta said videos, because there were more than one. Here's the link: (oh, I ought to warn you, you'll need a pencil and lots of paper! It's so fun!)

Hope it helps.

It sounds like you could use some books of photo references. There's an artists' book club that I get ads for that looks pretty good, call North Light Books:

good luck!
