I have a plain navy blue sweatshirt. I wish to sew, in a simple design, some words onto the front.

Well, the easiest way to do this is to cut your letters out of patches (that you can buy from any material store) that have glue on one side.

Mark the form of your letters with tailor's chalk so it can be rubbed off after cutting.

Arrange the letters where you want them, and iron onto your sweatshirt following the instructions on the package.

THEN sew around the outside edges using a standard zig-zag stitch, set at 30 stitches per inch. (You can vary the width of the stitch from 1 mm to 5 mm.) I would use thread in the same colour as the lettering.

There are a number of ways you can do this depending on what you would like it to look like at the end.

You can sew on letters that were cut from another piece of fabric, you can embroider letters on (if you have that capability on your sewing machine), I think the easiest is to go to any craft/sewing store and get some iron on (or sew on) letters. They come in packs (often in different fonts and colors) and apply them as instructed.

If you choose to make your own, make sure you cut out an area larger than the letter itself so that you can fold and iron the edges over to prevent fraying.
