Upon driving and giving gas...the car cuts out....lopes and I have to down shift to a lower gear (standard Transmission) to get it to stop......then I proceed on giving more gas to even it out....as soon as I slow down some I have to downshift again to get it to stop cutting out. The engine light comes on and will stay on for all day long but not every day....but today it came on and then started flashing. I was 70 miles away from home and no one to call for help. I proceeded on after checking the oil....it was 1/2 of a quart low so I put in oil to bring it back up to level. It blew white smoke out the tail pipe but cleared up when I got to going for a little bit. The engine light stopped flashing but stayed lit up the entire trip. I am just curious to what everyone thinks that could be wrong. I have several ideas but am not sure to what is wrong.

I would suggest you have a blown head gasket. Take a close look at your oil and see if it is discolored or milky looking. The white smoke would suggest anti freeze in the combustion chamber. It is probably a small leak. Go to an auto supply and have them scan your trouble codes, that is the reason your check engine lite is on. Don't wait, if it is a head gasket it could cause damage by putting water in your oil.

The car is miss firing. It also sounds like your burning oil. You should most definetly change the spark plugs. A good mechanic can look at the old plugs and tell you if oil is leaking in to the combustion chamber. White smoke from the exhaust pipe indicates oil being burned. If the car is burning oil then you will soon be looking at an engine over haul, but changing the plugs should fix your problem for now.
