They can save about $300 a month, so why don't they?
Some rich people smoke and drink, but most poor people smoke and drink, it is actually a vise of the poor. And yes, if they cut it out for a few years, maybe they actually can climb out of poverty! And yes, if you can afford it, you can get away with it, at least there is money left over to buy food and clothing, etc. for their children! It does make you more irresponsible to have drug habits when you can't afford them and there is something you can do to change your life. Does everyone have to be on drugs? don't think so.
I know many poor people and MOST of them are huge smokers, drinkers, sometimes use drugs, they gamble. They have children, should they be doing that? It's a lot of money going down the tubes. I see them blow their money all the time, and yet liberals say you are supposed to feel sorry for them and not judge? why?

Conservatives are right that it's not how much you make, it's how you spend it.

And once they've stopped smoking and drinking you can make them sell their TVs and read books, they don't buy the books they can be borrowed for free from the library, then they can improve their knowledge and will become better educated.

Once they've done that they'll understand why you want to make them eat healtier foods.
Obviously it's a waste to stop here so then the next step is to make them exercise and force them to lose weight that'll make them healthier and even more productive.
So now they are fit, can work longer, have healthy life styles and will live longer.
But why stop there... because they are poor why should they be allowed to drive cars and clutter up the roads, polluting the planet and spoiling the enjoyment for the rich?
Now you wouldn't want all these poor people breeding so sterilise them all so only the rich can have children.

But now you've stopped them doing anything that they enjoy what have the poor got to look forward to?

Whilst you may not like what they do with their money what makes you think you have the right to stop them doing it?

As you're American let me give you another idea, you're not allowed to vote because you're not white. You must give up your seat on a bus because you're not white. Are they good ideas? Well they have both been laws in certain states in your country in my lifetime, were wanted by people who thought they knew what was best for others and should be remembered as a shameful disgrace on Americas history.

If you give government the right to apply limits to peoples lives because it knows better than they do, where do you think it would stop?

That has to be a record!

During the course of reading ur statement I thought 3 times, what the hell was the question?
the first after only about three lines.
maybe i am tired.
If u asked me a question like that face to face i might consider suicide before u finished.

just thought i'd let u know.

what was the question?

Oh yes, if they didn't smoke and drink, what other pleasures would they have. Would they become so miserable that it just wouldn't be worth it.
if u is gonna preach...........
do it on health grounds please.
not all poor people are alcohol and nicotine junkies. those with brains limit it and yes i sort of agree with u and yes u have a point but u need to learn the common touch.

i think football fan has a point. How much, incidentally to u give to those less advantaged than urself? or do they not deserve it thru poor behaviour? So if middle/upper classes smoke Cuban cigars and drink and gamble - that's o.k. but if ur poor u can't play. Is that it?

I did exactly this, I hadn't changed my exersize very much when i stopped drinking soda. I had lost around 10 lbs although it took quite a while, as long as the green tea isn't like nestle ice tea (which has just as much sugar as pop). Make sure that you don't end up replacing drinking pop with sugary fruit drinks. Plus you'll feel better, and you don't have to worry about your teeth decaying. Personally I find I sleep alot better than I did, even when I stay up too late and have to get up early it doesn't affect me as much (but I had also stopped drinking coffee as well)

You are right of course. They should be spending what little they have on good wholesome food, clothing and bettering themselves.
But then take a look at what you spend your money on. You can do the same and have plenty left over to help a poor family make a new life for itself.
Life is all about choices and we rarely any of us make the best ones.
Poverty has a way of creeping up on you.Be careful, it may be you next year.

Can't you understand That if they cut out eating, they will save more and if they sleep in the streets, like some do now, they will save even more. Where do you want them to stop saving money? Don't you think that it is the fault of the thieving government that squeezes the last dime out of poor people to subsidise their rich patrons.

You do the arithmetic. Cigs cost 5 of which 4.50 is tax. Saving 4.50 straight there. No? Drinks 2.0 of which 1.25 is tax. Petrol 4.0 per 5litres of which 3.0 is tax.

Note these are approximate figures. But the real figures are close if not higher. If you've got sympathy for the poor talk to your thieving scum of a government and spare us your moralising ill- informed tosh.

Poverty (in America) is not just a lack of money. It is a lack of education, ideas, options, and other things that non-impoverished people take for granted. Some poor smoke or drink to escape, avoid, or change thoughts or feelings. Others do not understand the harm they cause themselves (fiscal or physical) by consuming that which has been sold to them. Still other feel it is their right to indulge in what they perceive to be luxuries. Lastly, you have who do not realize that they are repeating the mistakes of their parents.

Why do conservatives have wars they can not afford? Why do they blow money on bridges. Dumb people make dumb choices. Poor people make or are manipulated into poor choices.

BTW is it ok to have a drug habit if you have money?

Many poor people have nothing in their lives. No holidays, no going out to pubs and clubs ect, the only thing they do is smoke and you want to take their one enjoyment in life away? This government taxes the poor all the time. It's cigarettes and beer that get heavily taxed year on year yet the fine cigars and malts don't.
