Hello, Venice is beautiful, I have been to Rome and all over Italy, and Venice is my far most favorite. So romantic. The only downs about Venice, is that it's expensive, due to the Euro. We are stationed in Germany, and the Euro is very high right now. $100 american dollars will get you about 75 euros. I'm not sure of the bad parts, but I have heard of some of stories about purse slicing, where they slice the bottom of your purse, to empty the contents. But, there is tons to see and do, and you cannot even do it all in weeks time! There are museums, operas, WONDERFUL resturants, cafes, and much more. San Marco Plaza is breathtaking also. The whole city is , matter of fact. We went in Feb., and it was quite still chilly, enough for a heavy jacket. Gondola rides are so romantic and neat, to see all of the old buildings and history. But, they are quite expensive , about -125 euro for an hour, some will bargain with you. There are also tons of little vendors, and downtown market place area where there are lots of shopping.

Have fun, and Enjoy Venice!

I was stationed in Germany up until last year and my wife and I had the opportunity to drive down to Venice on a weekend. We actually went during the off season but there was still plenty of tourists every where and a little chilly. If you stay around the main canals it is pretty much touristy enough that it made me feel like an American at at theme park. As far as "bad parts" don't worry about, but always be cautious when you travel. Keep in mind the locals want your business so as a community they are not going to put up with any blatant lawlessness that would make you as a tourist fearful. I would suggest go off the main canal for your gondola ride it is less expensive and more personal. We got ours just by the Historical Jewish Section and it was only 100 Euros (with tip). Here's a good tip: the canals have passenger boats that act like regular buses in cities with regular frequent stops. You can use it to thoroughly view all of the city as a tour (with your own tour book) for cheap. Be on the look out for some excellent photo spots. And I always travel with my Rick Steves Guide in my pocket.
