You don't need to clean your bio-wheel. Just leave it alone. The filter should be cleaned in the tank water you removed for your water change. Using tap water that contains chlorine and chloramines to rinse the filter and bio-wheel will kill all your beneficial bacteria.

never use tap water for this as you will kill the nitrosomas, what you do is get a very clean bucket, put some tank water in it and dunk it there, just dont scrape the filter just dunk and shake it in the water and that is all you need to do, not every thing will come loose but then again you dont want it too some of that brown stuff is good bacteria needed for the tank to work well

i understand what you mean, I also have a penguin 350b on between the tanks in my mattress room and the sound of the water going over the wheel drove me loopy for a on the same time as too. i ultimately have been given used to the sound after many nights dozing with a pillow over my head. I even have 4 cartridges in my clear out and a couple of of them I decrease open, bumped off the charcoal and put in some bio balls, for much greater area for the helpful micro organism. i don't understand if the two considered one of your cartridges have the froth or not yet you should the two do what I did with slicing and including some greater media for the micro organism or in case you the have a media basket and a cartridge. i like utilising the traditional cartridges because of the fact that is purely as elementary to do slightly slicing somewhat then pass out and purchase considered one of their specific media baskets. long tale short, as long as you upload some thing for the helpful micro organism to colonize on then removing the wheel is super. maximum filters do not even have it so it of course isn't that mandatory.

DONT clean them in tap water. It is going to kill all of your beneficial bacteria.

Instead, do a water change, and then use the removed tank water to rinse the filter with.

Unless the filter and wheel are covered in gunk, they wont need rinsing.

I have always been told not to clean the bio-wheel. I don't own one but have been checking into them. I have always used tap to clean my filters and have never had problems but you could try distilled water.

You can buy cans of sterile saline solution from opticians and pharmacies (in the contact lenses section). Could you use that?
