Don't bite off more than you can chew: manage your growth & staffing so you don't get so busy working for the business you don't have time to work on the business.
Don't outsource functions when doing them in-house would give you an opportunity to outshine the competition.
Don't devalue your goods or services by charging too little. Charge what you're worth. In most cases that's at least part of what customers go by when determining the quality of what you're offering.

Never give up, be an expert at what you do. Treat others as you would like to be treated! Love your work! Take time for yourself!
The customer is always right! Have support, good lawyer, good accountant, good peers and other business peers to coach you. Read the newspaper everyday. 8 hours of work, 8 hours of play and 8 hours of sleep, however, sales is 24 hours a day! Get use to it! Take mistakes as stepping stones... write down the crazy ideas, and your goals every year. revise and keep planning, fail to plan means plan to fail.

Incredible service. I had a small auto parts store for almost 8 years. I couldn't beat the major chains in price BUT I could offer free 1 hour delivery, free weekly credit to repair shops, I stayed after hours to allow the public a chance to pick up parts after they got off work, I opened on Sundays.
I treated my customer like a King.
