Music ripped to 128 kbps takes up about one MB per minute. Using this formula it can be assumed that 30 GB will hold approximately 10,280 three minute songs. This is not accounting for the operating system of the player which also takes up space on the hard drive.

It really depends on the file type, and bit rate, which is the quality, of the file. I believe with the Ipod, they usually advertise the song count using 128kbps bit rate in the .aac file format, and each song being 4mb. The 20,000 song Ipod is the 80GB one. The 30GB Ipod using the file type I described above only holds 7,500 songs. In order for a 30GB Ipod to hold 20,000 songs, each song file would have to equal 1.5mb, which would mean a low bit rate, which would mean that the songs will sound crappy and muffled.

It is an estimate. The real amount is a little less, like about 29.8 GB, and if each song is 4 minutes long, then, it holds about 7,300 songs. But if you are asking if it will loose memory, no.
I know from my mini, although it says it holds 4 GB, it really holds 3.6 GB. It is the same with the 30 GB iPod.

you dont and it most likley doesnt. i dont know how big a file AAC are but if you have a bunch of long songs then it wont hold 20k itll hold less but if yuor songs are all short or you have lots of short ones round 2 min then itll hold more. they base that number on 4 minute long songs with no videos or pictures or files (like if you wer using it as a portible drive)
my Zen Vision W is 30 gig and holds from 17k to 20k depending on song length and file type becaus wav. files are big and mp3 are med and wma. are small they say on mine it can hold a lil over 20k wma at 4 min per song. so im guessing AAC is that size(ish)
so in all relity you dont know unless you fill it and count the song you have in it.

no, the 80 GB is supposed to hold 20,000 songs...and it all depends on how you format the songs and the length of the songs...20,000 is an approximation.

sigh.. maybe.. i'll let you figure it out..
64mb = 10-30 songs...
64mbx2=128
128x2=256
256x2=512
512x2=1gb (i think.) 1gb = 1,000,000,000 bytes which is one million kb.
so.. you can figure the rest out.
