Looking to learn more about processors. Am a little familiar with the intel brand (other than the Celeron D? - is this one of their faster or newer ones?). What is considered faster in AMD, Athalon or Sempron? And last but not least, which would be faster: 1.8GHz or 3.2Ghz? I think I may have those two confused.
Thx in advance - g ...

This would be for an 'older' (elderly) friend - she simply wishes to surf a bit, check email, and maybe doing some (local) office-type functions (doesn't play games or need to store lots of music or pix.)

The Celeron D is a budget model, not as good as Pentium or the new Core 2 Duo. Athlons are faster than Semprons, the Semprons are AMDs budget versoins. As for speed, in general the 3.2Ghz would be faster, but you cannot always compare speeds across different platforms. For what you are talking about, I would recommend either the AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+, or for a little more the Intel Core 2 Duo E6300.

Celerons are weak processors. Semprom is betther than Athlon but not Athlon 64. If you are looking to buy a good processor but don't want to spend a fortune, go for a conroe e6300. Make sure you get a motherboard that supports it though.

I suggest that your friend check with the local Sr.Citizens Group.
They might be able to get her an older model that would be sufficient for her needs MUCH cheaper than a new one.

OR

Check the "local" computer repair shops. They probably have several units that would do the job fairly cheaply.
