I think that relation is one where there is always bound to be friction. Primarily bcos the MIL sees that after marriage the son pays more attention to the DIL. Since there is an age difference between the MIL and DIL there will be a difference in ideas and behaviour.
The DIL and son will have to take soecial care taht the MIL does not feel that she is not given all the importance and respect her. This is difficult to manage and usually it ends up in a dispute.

SET LIMITS!!
Sounds easy, but trust me, it's not. You must ensure, without starting a fight, that your Mom-in-law understands that you are now the woman in your husband's life, and that she is no longer in charge.
If she's acting or commenting in a fashion that makes you uncomfortable, you need to talk to her about it. Don't ask your hubby to intervene......it places him in a hard spot, and can cause more friction in your marriage than you want. You are the adult, so take the initiative.
If she still refuses to accept limits on what she can do or say, then you need to talk to your hubby about possibly removing her input from the situation (moving, or limiting her access to your home in other ways).

No it is not predisposed to fiction. Have open communications with each other. Might find out you two have more in common than you thought. Communication is the key.

because the mother in law somertimes feels that the daugther in law is taking her son away from her. Also a lot of mothers are very protective of their sons and if the daugther in law hurts him in any way it will cause friction between them

perhaps, but i think its more predominant in families where there is a single male child. the mother may feel threatened by the new female in her son's life so its natural that she try to assert herself as the alpha female. you can try to lighten the tension by showing the mother-law that she continues to remain the top woman in your husbands' life (even though you may know the opposite is true). trying to battle it out or ingratiating yourself will only leave you spent and feuding with the woman.
