Any computer nowadays will support most anything. If you are accustomed to using a PC, get a PC. The only recommendations I can make are:
An Intel Core 2 processor or AMD equivalent
At least 2 GB of RAM
A video adapter with at least 128MB of video RAM
A large SATA hard disk at least 160GB
At least a 3 year warranty
Look at www.govconnection.com
Select "Computers" from the drop down list at the top. You can then use the criteria menu to narrow your results. If you want to look at Dell models you'll have to go to Dell's website.
You should probably purchase a computer from a local reseller that can also service the computer if problems arise. Otherwise you'll have to ship it back to the Manufacturer. Most warranties are DEPOT warranties, meaning mail it back or replace the parts yourself. The cost of the parts is covered though.

It depends on your preference: PC, Mac, etc.
Also what type of games do you play? If they are graphics-demanding games then you will need more video memory.
Take a look at dell.com (even if you do not plan to buy a Dell) Click on customize PC. Keep an eye on certain features and specifications:
-Processor (The higher the number, the faster your programs, games, and overall computer will be: Ex. 2.8 Ghtz)
-Hard Drive Space (anywhere from 80 GB - 120GB to hold all your media from movies and music to programs and games)
-RAM (nothing under 1GB, more and more programs are becoming very demanding. I would get at least 1 gig for smoother sailing)
-Video Card (Can't go wrong with Nvidea 256mb, you can do 128mb and up)
Of course, cost is a factor if you need to worry about that. It is always cheaper to build on your own (or a friend). But Brands are all preference (I personally dislike Compaqs and Dells, but I like Sony Vaio) Keep looking and learning online by reading reviews and getting further information. Also to find out what you need. Cnet.com is a good source too.
Good luck and have fun computer shopping.
