Darn you all, always beating me to the answer. do wan to correct the guy with the snow remark. snow not reaching the ground first of all is called Virgo. Second, the precip always will fall as ice crystals first. That's why in severe thunderstorms, you see them reach the ground all the way becuas eof all the forcing in the upper levels. Rain will always fall from the cloud as some form of an ice crydtl (ice, snow), However, snow can fall, then melt, and re-freeze as sleet or freezing rain. Also, it all depends where the freezing line is in the air. If its at the surface, the ice crystals will reach the ground with little or no change. if its just above at the surface, it will fall as ice crystals, melt, and likely refreezes as freezing rain or sleet. Also, if its way above 32, then the ice crystals, unless dynamics are favorable, will melt and become all liquid.

Virga=Rain
Virgo=Snow
