Salmon swimming upstream to spawn. Getting eaten by bears along the way, swimming uphill, flopping up waterfalls, etc. Seems like way too much effort.

osmosis- concentrations tend to flow from path of high concentration to low concentration regardless of resistence.

wick action- water can flow up hill in a small capillary as a result of surface tension instead of going down hill which is the path of least resistence.
