I have a 3.1L GM N-body, which has always been filled with 87. I started filling it with 89 and I have noticed a small difference in acceleration. Will filling my car with 89 or 93 octane do any damage to the engine?

No it is not dangerous, if fact your motor will last longer, as long as you don't abuse it and keep a strict maintenance schedule, and you will have better fuel mileage and reduced emissions as a result of the motor having the better fuel.

No higher octane fuel has a hotter burn temperature and is for high performance engines and or trucks that tow a lot of weight to help prevent pinging or pre ignition. It is also good to run a few tanks through your car every once in a while because it will actually act like a mild fuel system cleaner. Also it may give the engine a couple more hp (1-2) but it is not noticeable, and not worth the extra money all the time.

Not only will it not hurt your engine to go higher octane, it will help it. Higher octane=cleaner burn. I have added 107 octane to my toyota pickup (which is 10 years old and 170,000 miles) and it has improved acceleration and power and I have never had a problem with it. In some cars you wont notice a difference at all so it is a waste of money. It has no apparent effect on my girlfriends toyota camry.

No, it's only a 2octane point difference. Typically, higher octane is used in exponentially higher compression engines, to prevent pinging on acceleration

But, why change something that works?

If you mean regular plus and supreme, the 3 different grades in unleaded fuel, no there will be no damage. Theres really not much difference except price.
