For Ex:
Your boy/girlfriend leaves u for a another person. You begin to have doubts about urself. that ur worthless, or u'll never find another person like her, or life is unfair.
--like irrational thought.
instead of thinking u;ll find another person and that ur life is not over.
--rational thoughts

Emotions are caused do to the belief
ie; u think ur depressed becuase ur spouse left u.

i think they are come to think of it if you beleive you are happy you are happy if you beleive you are sad you cry

if you beleive you are telling the trouth you are in your own mind

it depends on which is precursor.
lets assume that we are talking about an issue.
if you have formed "strong" beliefs for that perticular issue, emotions will be caused - directed by your beliefs.
but if you come across a completely new situation, 'most probably' your beliefs will be governed by what is your emotional status is.
but in general, emotions are based on beliefs, but its not true to say if they are 'caused' by beliefs.

Other way around. Many beliefs are caused by emotional reactions.
