Artur Rubenstein and Claudio Arrau were once considered the classic Chopin performers, but their style is out-of-date, sort of a pre-digital age mode. The standard for performance has risen increadibly since then due to sound technology. My favorite performers of Chopin are Murray Perahia, Angela Hewitt, Garrick Ohlsson and Maurizio Pollini (for the more daring listener). All of them are still alive and performing. Pollini; Pollini and Perahia have won Grammys for their Chopin recordings, while Ohlsson has won one for his Beethoven. For Malcom D; I would not consider any Chopin recording to be definitive, because there is so much room for interpretation in his music. However, I have found that Murray Perahia's recordings of the Ballades are more consistent and artistic than Zimerman's.
