just keep them clean, especially the nipple and the surrounding area. make sure you have something like a cold compress available for when your milk comes in.....they will be vary sore...good luck sweetie... If you have any questions or problems, the nurses at the hospital will help you start in the beginning. you can also email me if you have any questions. I have breastfeed two and I am going to have another one within the next week.

Unless you have inverted nipples you do not need to do anything special to prepare for breastfeeding. I would suggest that you find a local la leche league group and get support now. Then they'll be there for you in the first few weeks after birth when you'll need support the most. Good luck!

You really don't have to do anything special at all. In fact, too many creams/lotions, etc. aren't a good thing. I was told by my ob/gyn to wear a bra made of cotton (because it's breathable) and not to wash my nipples with soap... and not to put any creams or lotions on my nipples either. I've been nursing my son for 10 months and the advice has worked for me. Oh! And I don't use nursing pads either. I stocked up on them when I was preggie but have found I never have to use them.

You may want some moisturizer for your nipples, lots of pregnant women do as they get dry. Other than that, the other poster got it right.
Oh joining the La Leche League to meet some moms who are breastfeeding is good too. You can join when you are pregnant. www.llli.com

I'm breastfeeding my 6 month old, and I've found breast pads and lanolin cream are two must haves. Good luck!

you don't need any. this is a natural thing. your body is prepared to do it. there should be no pain when breastfeeding either. it might feel a little awkward at first, but no pain should occur. if so your baby is latched on wrong-typically the baby will not have enough nipple in their mouth and it will cause pain.
