The three most serious problems facing the world today in my opinion are the AIDS epidemic, world hunger, and the corrupt school system in the United States.
AIDS could easily be the disease that wipes out a good portion of the population, and it's spreading in places like the United States, and not just in remote places like Africa anymore. An estimated 39 1/2 million to 47 million people are living with AIDS as of 2006, but that is not the part that should cause the greatest bit of concern to people. What should cause the greatest bit of concern is the fact that the infection rates are spreading more and more each year, and as many as 6 1/2 million people are becoming newly infected with HIV each year and that number is expected to continue to climb. To put an end to this issue, which is quickly becoming a serious epidemic, global awareness is important when it comes to education about HIV and AIDS. HIV and AIDS is not like the flu, you have to put yourself in a situation to catch it, unless you are born with it, and the risk behavior on the part of people has to stop so that the epidemic can stop.
World hunger will never come to an end as long as there is an imbalance of money that is so extreme. As long as you have people who are ridicously rich with tens of billions of dollars, you will also have people who are ridiculously poor and cannot afford the basic necessities of life like food, water, clothing, and shelter. It's important to raise awareness, raise money, and overtax the wealthy to help balance out this problem, but I doubt that any government in the world could do this successfully at this time.
The corrupt school system in the United States is the underlying cause of many problems in the United States. We hire illegal immigrants to do jobs that U.S. citizens won't do, can't do, or are untrained to do. We live in a society that requires a college degree in most cases to get ahead, but our school system doesn't prepare students for college. We live in a society where parent participation is neccessary for a student to succeed, yet the majority of parents do not get involved. The No Child Left Behind Act was the biggest mistake that could have been made in our school systems, to leave no child behind, we lowered the standards to the lowest they can get, so that children are not capable of surviving in the real world based on the education that they receive. To correct this problem, the school systems need hirer standards, better teachers (which would require teachers being paid more money), newer curriculum and textbooks, buildings that are not health hazards, and we need to set the bar of excellence high and aim high, instead of lowering it to almost nothing and shooting for the ground.

War, Poverty, In-tolerance. War is always with us and has been for a long time the solution is to try to better understand the motives behind it and try to solve them, Poverty the solution of course is to use the money you would have spent on War and spent it on the poor, and in-tolerance simply try to gain the view from another's eyes and then deal with the person or persons from that perspective and perhaps in the process the world will be better for it

The three poisons. Anger, greed and lack of compassion for other beings. The anger that allot of people are feeling is causing needless problems all over the planet with wars, destruction and death. The greed that exists today is the cause of most of our problems with the "I want what I want and I don't care about you attitude". And finally, the lack of compassion that most people feel toward other creatures on the planet, be it human or otherwise, is going to eventually destroy us.

in no order: terrorism, corruption (mainly in developing countries), underabundance of natural resources
The first 2 stunt the growth of developing countries in obvious ways..
The last one fuels corruption (which sometimes fuels terrorism), and in effect keeps many developing countries relatively poor... America is an anomality; most developed countries have historically been low in some more important natural resources. Canada's recent abundance came after it was rich, ditto for Britain's coal wealth. A country that has all the oil (or diamond, or whatever) money it'd ever need is more likely to invest less in education and more in exploiting its precious resource.

Terroist, haters and religion. More people hate each other is the reason why. It should not be like this. It will never be different as the book of Revelations say, all things must come to pass before the coming of the lord Jesus Christ.

Arrogance - ie. 'listening', though without being prepared to understand or adapt to what you hear
violence/aggression - as a result of the frustration of your inability to two way communicate and understand
people not 'listening' (by whatever senses) to each other
(and - my problem - excessive passiveness; so, over-acceptance of too much bad going on outside as long as i can keep this bit of the world okay)

People. Don't. Care
Four words technically but it's true, everyone has the potential to be great and if we really wanted to, we'd have everything fixed in a few years... but most just don't care.

Greed, lust, and deception. If you look at the news or read books, they always center around these three things. It is a shame.
