In reading these answers, it is clear that many of the responents are not teachers.
I prefer teaching elementary school to middle school (since those are the 2 that you mentioned narrowing it down to), but I prefer teaching in upper elementary.
Why? It is hard to define a why. It is different for every person. For instance, i would not like to teach 6th grade, even if it was still part of elementary in my district, because of a few factors, not the least of which is hormones in the kids.
I have, at some point, taught every grade from k-8 (when substituting) but as a full time teacher have only taught 3rd and 5th grade. I prefer 5th because the students are still young enough to be moldable, not tough cases to crack in order to teach yet, but they are old enough to do a lot of independent thinking and reasoning.

If you are really un sure of where you think you fit, and are worried about it, I would seriously suggest subbing for a year if you can afford to, it will give you a rich and varied experience.

I find teaching for the Masters course a good experience. The students would have passed their Bachelors and are serious in learning. They put quality efforts to learn what is taught and try to expand their horizons. I have always taught Masters and above ( MPhil and PhD guidance), hence I have no idea of pre-university classes. But I guess if I had to teach those classes I would pick up Middle classes where I could teach my stuents the knowledge and skills needed for higher classes.

Middle school, since elementary schoolers are so immature, while high schoolers get into all sorts of trouble. Middle schoolers are old enough to not act silly, but not old enough to get into all that trouble.

There is standardized testing in 1st grade and Kindergarten in some schools.

"Me"- That's your opinion... we have ours about kids of certain age groups. Just because our opinions are different doesn't make them wrong. This is an opinionated question, not an "Explain this math problem" question.

Elementary children are rewarding to teach, but the are also "needy" and require a lot of your attention.

Middle school students have raging hormones. Children in the same grade are at a wide range of emotional and physical maturity. The best term to describe them is "squirrely."

High school students are more independent. They have teen age angst issues, but by the time they reach their junior and senior years I find them perfect to teach.

2ND grade--I guess b/c they know enough to keep going and you don't have to do portfolios and you are in charge still and have some control over their behavior and when they act up, you can really scare them by calling their parents and so forth. They still have major behavior problems--some of them and special needs, but they seem to get over it better and love you anyway. You still can be a positive influence in their life before it is too late, when they get older. It is very rewarding and hard, but I would say that it is the best grade to teach. That is just my opinion.

I am certified PK-4th. My favorite age has been Pre-k because they are in their most crucial years. That is the time to mold them and set a strong base for the following years in school.
