I just bought a frontloader washer and the salesman said to leav the door ajar as the water around the seal will start to mildew from the door being closed - I have done so and so far so good

I want to second Rosarita's answer. I have a Kenmore HE3 and when I left the door closed, it developed an awful odor. After doing some checking, I found you have to leave the door ajar when you are finished with your laundry. No more odor!

You may have a leak someplace that is causing the odor. I would check for that first, then, I would try soaking a box or two of baking soda in it. Another thing you might try is to to put a small tray of fresh coffee grounds in the washer for a few days. It will help get ride of the odor also.

If you close the door on a front loading machine you are trapping the residual moisture inside the machine and it will support mold and bacteria growth. You must (as others have said) leave the door ajar to allow the moisture to evaporate.

Leave the door open. I unscrewed the light bulb in mine and just turn if off when I am done with it. Also cut down on the amount of detergent you put in, if you put to much in it foams up and makes the seal load up with mold and mildew.

Run a cycle of hot water, bleach, and detergent. After it finishes running leave the lid up. If you put the lid down it traps the odor inside.,
