Government Is Wasting $ 57.600 A Year For Every Single Hospice Patient / Harms Everybody In The USA?

My grandmother is in a nursing home. She has to pay $ 6.200 every month. They even put every diaper extra on the bill, even she already pays so much. That nursing come gets rich in that they employ cheap immigrants / aliens without health care insurance. They rip of all old people. Nursing homes have extremely exaggerated prices in the USA. The government should set a limit for all nursing homes.

My granny is very sick. She feels bad when she smells anything like deodorant, soap etc. She needs oxygen and really needs a single bad room. She also is snoring every night. She could not sleep with another patient in one room. Her account is shrinking very fast. If all her money is used and she has nothing, all her life time savings and assets wasted for a nursing home, who earns too much, she will get Medicaid. Medicaid will pay $ 2.000 less.

My granny is in a single bed room because she is a private paying patient. With Medicaid she will lose the right too sleep alone. That is horrible. I can not understand how they put more than 1 person in a room don’t matter what they pay. That’s awful. Almost every old person snores. It’s discussing to share a toilet with very sick people.

The worst thing is, that Hospice gets $ 4.800 every month just for visiting her. Almost no service is not $ 4.800 worth. The government / Medicare pays just for my grandmother $ 57.600 per year. Imagine how much for every old person in the USA. That’s crazy. It is not necessary to pay them so much. The hospice is not necessary, because they don’t do anything useful, the nursing staff takes care of her. They just come to “steal” money legally. Unfortunately they get paid. I don’t understand. That unnecessary and crazy money wasting has to be stopped.

The government refuse to pay for the nursing home, but they pay for almost useless Hospice. The $ 4.800 + grandmothers income would have covered my grannies nursing home costs and she would not have to waist her assets and hardly earned life time savings. She said that she is so sad to loose everything.

The only one who has an advantage is the money making business “Hospice”. They rip of our government’s money. Every single penny of the government is money from hard working Americans => WE ALL!

How can we stop this extremely unnecessary money wasting problem?! This harms everybody in the USA old and young people!

It sounds like your grandmother is very dear to you, I was very glad to read that. All I can tell you is my own experience with hospice at home. My Mom and Dad both had terminal cancer, I knew of the trouble with nursing homes from an experience my Dad had with rehab, it was horrible. I had to be there constantly to protect him from sheer stupidity. The main problem is that they are short of staff and the homes will squeeze every dollar they can from patients. First they prescribed a drug that is only given to heart patients before an internal procedure, if I hadn't stopped it my Dad would have died that day. Instead of checking the doctor merely copied all of the drugs from his hospital records. They claimed to be rehabbing him, but I would sneak in and find him slumped across a table falling over. When I asked why he was not being walked, they said he wasn't ready. I had already been walking him for 3 nights! I immeduately got him out of there and took a family leave to care for him. That brings me to the hospice question. Dad was so happy to leave there, he cried when I brought him home; Dad was a Kansas farmboy, they don't cry! The problem was that I was not equipped to care for a dying person, I needed help, fast. I called the hospice service and it was the best thing I could do. They understand the feelings that dying people are having and they taught me all about the medicine and how to keep my parents comfortable. The nurses from the service were like angels of mercy, they gave me the chance to make my parents last days a peaceful and important time for our entire family. Be vigilant with your grandmothers care, ask questions and don't be afraid to voice your opinion; when people see that you are involved and watchful, they will be more attentive to your gram. That is part of the problem; when Dad was in the rehab I was shocked to see that there were only 2 or 3 families that came regularly to see their relatives, most never got a visit. Are you aware that Hospice is SUPPOSED to allow people who are terminal to remain in the OWN homes, rather than go to a nursing home?

If you're grandmother is paying for both, yes, she's being ripped off. Why don't you consider moving her in with you, and allowing Hospice to do their job there? It would save her a ton of money, they provide up to 24 hour care (registered nurse sitters), and virtually every insurance program out there will cover the cost, without out of pocket copays.

My granddad did that........and he lasted 4 years before we finally said goodbye to him. Hospice did a WONDERFUL job, and I still send them a donation every year as a way of thanking them, and giving another a chance to be at peace when the time comes.

I understand where you are coming from and I am so so so sorry about your Grandmother. My Grandparents were lucky in that they had several children who were able to care for them when they were not able to do so. I admit that I don't know much about nursig homes, except that I wish they didn't need to exist. I do also have sympathy for those in need of hospice care though. I am happy to pay taxes to help care for the elderly though. I think they have earned the right to every convenience possible. In fact, I am willing to pay more taxes if need be. Just know that there are people out here praying for your family and I wish you all the best.
