Mez is right in some regards, but not all of the moon is asteroid dust. Some asteroids hit the moon so hard that it entered the moon's mantle and cause huge calderas to spew lava all over the moon. These are the dark spots on the moon and are called mare.

Wikipedia says that: A substantial portion of the lunar surface has not been explored and a number of geological questions remain unanswered.

Of course, nobody actually knows what the moon is made of. Back in the dark ages, it was felt that because of the craters, which looked like holes, the moon resembled "green cheese", since the process of making cheese included the creation of "bubbles" in the cheese.

I am sure that the results from the samples of moon material which have been retrieved by the astronauts duing the Apollo missions can be found somewhere on NASA's website, however the "core" samples would not have penetrated very far under the surface. The surface samples could very well have been from meteorite impacts, and therefore not indicative of the material of the moon at all.

I believe one of the reasons for wanting to establish a moon base is to do some preliminary mining there to determine whether there is anything of value to mankind under the surface.

Hope this helps.

Volcanic rock from earth from when a planet the size of mars hit the earth throwing material into orbit around the earth that formed the moon.

Dust and various types of igneous rock, similar to those found in Earth's mantle because the moon formed after much of the mantle was thrown into orbit by "the Big Whack".
