I work on a computer all day, and I know my workstation is not set up well. I am trying to have better posture, because I know that's part of the problem. I already saw a doctor and she told me I have a slipped disk in my cervical spine and should go to physical therapy, but there's NO way I can afford it. What exercises should I do/devices should I wear?

Although your best results will be obtained if you read this book inconjunction with physical therapy, Robin McKenzie's book "Treat Your Own Neck" is designed for patients to read so they better understand their neck pain and what is OK to do, and what is not OK...what symptoms should you avoid and which ones are normal. There are several exercises in the book, but be sure to read the manual to understand which ones are appropriate for you...I had a patient come to me one time who said "That McKenzie stuff didn't work." Then I found out he was doing ALL the exercises...about half which were inappropriate for him. Once we pointed out to him some points he missed in the book, he began the appropriate exercises and recovered nicely.

You've already taken the first step which was to be evaluated by a physician to rule out medical causes for neck pain...now that a neuromusculoskeletal cause has been identified, the book very well may help you...but the best results occur when used as part of physical therapy. (Even if just for a few visits).

You need to see a physical therapist. Do you not have medical insurance through work? That should cover PT with a copay or coinsurance somewhere between 15-40 dollars. Even if you cannot afford to pay that for multiple sessions, you should still find the money to pay for the initial evaluation and a few follow up sessions. The physical therapist will tell you what exercises you can do, and follow up to ensure that you are performing them well and improving.

Even as a PT, I would not recommend any exercises to you without being able to evaluate you first. There are many things that could be wrong with your neck - no two neck patients I've seen have ever been exactly the same. That is why you need to see a PT rather than gather random exercises from online that could hurt you more than help you. Good luck.

Push ups may help if done properly. Since half your neck muscles are also working the shoulder exercises for the shoulders as well as the neck will be given. There are also other items, traction, electrical muscle stimulation and manaul stretching that can be done. But get evaluated by the PT first before starting any exercises. Depending on the problem area some exercises will irritate and not help.

Move to Canada. Where it's free, just like it should be.
