Draw your Oval shape in a layer above the photo.
Then use CTRL+G.
That will make the masking layer.
Then you can save it cropped, or flatten it and do whatever else you're trying to do with it.

you can do that in word without gimp. just insert an oval from your drawing toolbar. Then right click and select format autoshape then go to the fill and select fill effects. then select the picture tab and browse for the pic you want. if it comes out skewed you just have to go change the size/crop the picture file. and use the text wrap feature for the writing.

first open ur pic u wanted to crop, then on the tool bar pick eleptical marquee, the drag choose the pic u wanted to crop in oval form, then right click choose select inverse.

You can also try this...
make an oval shape then rasterize it then u can insert the picture by ctrl+G
it is much easier

use the Circle Select tool from your tool bar
draw and oval around the area you want to keep
then
Ctrl+Shift+ I to inverse the select
hit the delete button.
