I don't know if research has been done on this subject but I think it is an interesting question. Does the incidence of marital infidelity change with economic class? In other words, among married couples only, who is more likely to cheat on their spouse, the rich, the poor or the middle class. I contend that the middle class cheats the most, due to boredom and the typical middle class routine. My coworkers all have other opinions. One guy says rich people cheat the most and another says poor people do. Please explain your answers if you can...

You may be right, but strictly from a numbers game, because the middle class is by far the largest segment of American society.

But affluence would only affect opportunity, it would be extremely difficult to determine a causality between wealth and proclivity to cheat.

I would think that the rich would be more likely to cheat they do it just because they can, rich people are more bored that the middle class or the poor, the middle class just don't have the time to cheat as they work to put food on the table and pay the mortgage, the poor have nothing so who wants to cheat with the poor, the rich have the time and the resources.

I think all classes cheat, I just don't know which one does more. I would guess the lower classes cheat in greater degree as a form of entertainment. They say money stress is the hardest on people...maybe this leads them to cheat? Then again, there are a lot of "new" rich people, especially the ones on reality tv, that seem prone to cheating at the first sign of temptation.

At the local Emergency Room in town, 8 out of the 10 docs there are either divorced due to cheating, in the process of divorce due to cheating or currently cheating on their spouse. Hmmm, I think wanting a stress-free relationship could be the cause of this, but I believe that if you look at the childhood history of a cheater, you will probably find that he/she is from a divorced family, wasn't accepted by parent/parents with love that all children deserve, and/or probably wanted more people to like them during the schoolage years....any combination of these would probably be in the background history of a cheater.

I don't know if there has been any research, but I've known people of all classes to cheat. Several of our presidents were known for it. You probably think Clinton was the first.... NOT! I think JFK was the biggest philanderer. And I've known people on welfare who cheated.

Whether or not someone has a moral standard of faithfulness is about the person, not how much money they have.

Best Wishes,

Sue

I don't know but it is an interesting social question. I am not sure if there is a correlation among social class. My personal opinion is that you would find a better correlation between family situation during childhood.

I've seen it done from the poorest of poor to the richest of rich. It doesn't matter on the class, its the person.

Interesting question - I would think rich people - they seem to think that money is more important than other things in life - Just my opinion though. Interested to see what other people think.

I think the rich are bored and that's why they cheat the most.
