Speed is determined by a lot of things, but the processor is the most important part. All of these people saying just look for higher GHz are a bit uninformed about the latest technology. GHz is not the defining factor in processing speed nowdays, it is determined by architecture. The Intel Core 2 Duos are the fastest out right now, with the Core 2 Extreme being the fastest.

just look for the parts u need ... and get somthing uptodate if ur spending money ...coreduo ... 1gig ddr2 memory ..7200rpm harddrive ... and a clear and bright display ... if u plan on gaming get a good videocard in it ... concentrating on processor speed is the first mistake people make when buying a pc ... ability to expand and upgrade and getting quality parts other than the processor is much more important than processor speed ... 99% of pc users NEVER max out any processor anyway .. the only ones that really benefit from blazing CPU speeds are people that work with video alot and convert large video files ... a fast cpu doesnt make a fast computer ... fast harddrives in raid and fast memory combined with a fast cpu will make a fast feeling pc ...

Computers are being built for really specific stuff nowadays - gaming, graphics, music, work, and so on. A middle of the road computer that will handle everything pretty well will have a 3 gigahertz processor and at least 500 megs of ram - a gig of ram would be better.

Processing speed is rated in gigahertz now. The higher the Ghz the more computations per second it can do(Example 3.6Ghz.). RAM (which refers to memory) is what is used to temporarily store information for the computer (Example 1024 megabytes or 1 gigabyte). Again the higher the better.

Don't worry about the best speed. What are you going to use it for, general web browsing or hard core programming? If you will be doing web surfing or day-to-day business activities, I would look into an AMD processor that's not the best but in between or a Pentium 4, whatever is cheaper.

well when u try to buy a new computer is not only the speed on your computer, is like when u buy a car it could have the super speed motor but the worst tires.....the average speed in computer is between 2.4GHz to 3GHz on the CPU and 1ghz on RAM....it will depend on what kind of computer this is average for Desktop PC but if u are looking for Laptop average is between 1.4GHz to 3GHz and 1GHz for RAM. You have to choose for a 32 bit OS or 64bit OS. Depend on what use are u going to give to your PC. Check this web site to compare $$$$

I'm just adding to what these guys are saying.
A general purpose computer spec are
AMD or Pentium 2.4 -3.0 ghz--general profomance for system
1.0 gb - 2.0 gb of memory- ----optimize application processing time
128mb video card--------------mainly for gaming or video editing
120 gb harddrive----------------reasonable storage for games, music amd videos/movie

and last but not least
Choose a brand or supplier than gives good customer support/ warranty.
Shop around and compare.

Good Luck.

Depends what you plan to use the computer for. I'd say anything above 2Ghz would be sufficient.

Ram is also important. A fast CPU is useless if you have barely any ram. I'd reccomend at least 512MB for a work computer (word processing, etc) and 1GB if you plan to use it for games, many applications etc.

I generally prefer to take people on an individual basis rather than on theological beliefs or lack thereof. Why? Because I know a lot of atheist pentiums. Questions like this ask for sweeping generalizations based on data from very questionable "studies".

processor speed is good, but make sure you have plenty of RAM or the speed of the computer will be affected.
