It's Christmastime and I'm looking to find something to buy for my dad. He's always in his wheelchair and has limited access to parts of the house. I want to get him something special so he can feel more like part of the family. Maybe some inspirational stuff would help because he often feels hopeless. Thanks ahead of time for all the help I can get! =)

My mom is in a wheelchair as well and lives in senior/handicapped housing.
Last year I bought her a tray that would fit on the arms of her wheelchair securely so she wasn't forced to eat dinner at the table all the time. She also uses it to work on her crafts and pay her bills, etc.
I also made her a cordless phone carrier for her wheelchair that fits on the handle so she doesn't have to worry about finding it.
Since your dad has limited access, maybe an intercom would be a convienence for him.
I am sorry he feels discourage and hopeless. I remember those days with my mom as well. I encouraged her by spending time with her and making the time to do so regularly. It really seemed to help her to know she could rely on me.
Best of luck to you.

I think it's very sweet that you're so concerned about making your father feel more included. I don't know of any inspirational stuff beyond a nice Bible (or Torah, or whatever), but I admire you for trying so hard to come up with a good gift.

What kinds of things does he like to do? Maybe buy some games that you can all play as a family? Or a really good book that you can read together? Sorry - it's late in the day and I'm too tired to have any good ideas.

Be sure to tell him how much you love him - that will be one the best gift he gets.

There are lots of things you can do to make your dad feel special. First off...tell him how you feel. A nice letter letting him know how much he means to you would warm his heart. When was the last time you had a family photo done? This doesn't have to be a nuisance, if the weather is too bad to get him out, take a digital photo at home and have it processed at your local one hour pharmacy...put it in a nice frame and there you have it! You could also rearrange your house in order to make him more apart of the family. If he's downstairs and the dining room is upstairs, why not bring the family dinner to him...move the table to a convenient spot and start making a point to spend atleast one night a week home with the family!

I think it'd be real thoughtful to put together a collage picture frame or photo album for him with pictures of the entire family from as far back as when you (any siblings??) were little.
