Most of what he's put on the CD just doesn't come up on my screen, and the text files just plain won't open . . . Also, whenever I try to use that CD in my disc drive, I can't get the door open when I go to take it out, without using a paper clip. I don't have any trouble opening and closely the door normally. Any ideas out there?

Splitting the line along Mac/PC compatibility for CD is too simplistic; but the disc media might be deteriorated to begin with.

I once had to burn a Word document onto a CD in order to print it from a PC, wireless connection fizzled out for some reason, any way I first had to save it as a .txt doc in order for the PC to read it. Whenever a .wpd file is transferred from the PC to my Mac, the only program that will read it is NeoOffice. NeoOffice won't work on a PC but OpenOffice will, try opening them with that program, it's free. Or you can tell your friend to save them as .txt files and burn them again.

Macs and PCs use two different operating systems, thus the files will be incompatible unless you find a way to convert them.

In older macs especially, you had to use 3rd party software to burn CDs, such as Toast, and when doing this you absolutely had to specify cross-platform disk. My guess is, he missed this detail.
PS - Certain file types, such as .rtf and word docs, are cross-platform; some others aren't. I get text files generated on PCs and use them on my mac every day.

If your PC is a different sofware, then it might have some problems
