Volume = width * length * thickness

Remember that you need everything in feet, so convert 4 inches to 1/3 foot.

Volume = 2 ft x 2 ft x 1/3 ft = 4/3 cu. feet.

Then use ratios to figure the number of bags

---------- = ---------
1/2 cu ft . 4/3 cu. ft

Cross multiply and you get:

4/3 = 1/2 n

Now multiply both sides by 2:
8/3 = n

Convert to a mixed fraction:
n = 2 2/3

So you need 2 2/3 bags

V=2*2*4/12=4/3 ft^3
each bag =.5ft^3
(4/3)/.5=8/3=2 2/3. You need 3 bags.
