CHICAGO - Malachi Ritscher envisioned his death as one full of purpose.

At 6:30 a.m. on Nov. 3 — four days before an election caused a seismic shift in Washington politics — Ritscher, a frequent anti-war protester, stood by an off-ramp in downtown Chicago near a statue of a giant flame, set up a video camera, doused himself with gasoline and lit himself on fire.

Protesting a war is certainly any American's right. Waving a banner or setting oneself on fire doesn't impress me much, though. It's not enough to disagree. You have to come up with a better way and get other people to agree that it is indeed better. If that's too much work, then maybe you shouldn't be waving a banner around either.

Everybody should have the right to say what they want to say, but that is very hard to do in United States. The now a day war is total waist of people's taxes, and innocent people die from both sides.

"Ritscher's son, who shares his father's name, described his father as a former alcoholic who had had issues with mental illness."

I think this really explains it all. It was mental illness, not martyrdom.
