Drink plenty of hot fluids and make sure you're getting enough vitamin c.

Zinc tablets (like Cold-Eeze) work really well for about 50% of the population. If you don't know which half you're in, give them a try. Onion is a great natural decongestant. Slice one and keep a few slices nearby on a small plate until they stop stinking. Then replace them with fresh ones! You may smell like you need a shower, but you'll be able to smell. Ginger is great for the throat. Slice and boil some gingerroot, then drink the water it boiled in. Add some honey so you can get it down. Honey's a natural antibiotic, so it's better to use that than sugar.

I had the same thing...sore throat and my ears felt "full", so I started taking Zicam lozenges. They taste nasty and you can't chew or swallow, you have to let them dissolve in your mouth for some reason. They taste bad but they work really well!

The bottle says that they reduce the duration and severity of a cold, and I can say that both of those things happened to me! I had just a little bit of the sniffles, no cough, no fever. I am just blowing my nose a little more often and that's it.

I would stay away from the Zicam swabs that you are supposed to put in your nose. I heard that there is a lawsuit against them because some people have permamently lost their ability to smell, and they say it's from the Zicam swabs.

Not much you can do to not get it if it's already coming on. You can shorten its duration and the severity of the symptoms though.

To shorten it's duration: Take plenty of vitamin C, Zinc, selenium, and get plenty of sleep. Take that Airborne stuff. Get some Cold Eze lozenges or gum. They coat your throat in Zinc which will help shorten the cold.

To lessen the severity of the symptoms: Drink lots of fluids. This seems to help get rid of that gross feeling all over your body that you get. Also, don't blow your nose in the shower very hard. What happens is all the snot gets all runny and then when you blow hard, it shoots up into your sinuses and into your ear canals and then you get infections there, or they get clogged up adding to your misery. (Gross, I know)

In the future, make sure you keep your hands clean. Since you are in school, you are touching alot of door handles and such that other sick people have touched. Contrary to popular belief, most colds spread from hand to object to hand or hand to hand contact, and not through the air. Of course, some infections occur when people sneeze and such, but there is not much you can do about that, but you can be careful with your hands. After touching objects like door handles to after shaking hands with someone, don't touch your face, or eat until you have washed your hands.
You could also carry around one of those small Purell alcohol dispensers with you for when you can't wash your hands. They are only about as big as two thumbs.

Good Luck!
