Not the obvious answers but what about the subconcious answers? What drives people to watch movies? what is your favorite kind of movie? what kind of escape do you get when you go? do you always go with a date or do you go with friends? or by yourself? what is so great about the movies?

People go to the movies because they are drawn by the trailer and think hey maybe that will be good. Then after they've given $40 to the movie theater and have "escaped" life for 2 hours they feel satisfied. I don't go to the movies unless a movie is incredibly good. Most average movies aren't even worth the time to see much less $8.

Escaping reality sounds good. Personally, I go for the fresh buttered popcorn. I don't escape anything. I only go with friends or husband. Never alone. I could do without movies to tell you the truth. I like documentaries or movies based on a real life event.

because they don't have a problem with wasting their money to try to watch a movie in a room surrounded by people who just wont shut up (as you can probably tell I do not go to the movies)

Stephen King answered this question about horror movies in his book "Danse Macabre." He said that we like to watch horror because it's a preview of our own deaths, like rollercoasters that scare us but don't kill us. I think we like movies because we get to experience another life, one that we might have the possibility of living, like love stories, or one that we can never live, like another country or another century or the life of a famous person.

i think subconsciously we go to movies because it takes us to a place we've never been before...to imagine being in that anyone given situation...to pretend that we are that person in the movie...or just to take ourselves away from reality......
