There is no way out. Except the CD. Restart your laptop and press F12 or whatever it is. Check to see if it says CD-ROM in the new list. If it doesn't, then go back and try the other option. (Located at the top of the the DELL logo screen). Then select CD-ROM Drive and insert the Windows XP CD. Press enter. Follow the onscreen instructions.
NOTE: I AM SORRY TO SAY THAT THIS WILL WIPE OUT EVERYTHING UNLESS YOU SELECT THE DO NOT FORMAT OPTION DURING THE WINDOWS XP RE-INSTALLATION PROCESS. IF YOU SELECT DO NOT FORMAT, THEN THE PROGRAMS WON'T BE IN THE START MENU. THEY WILL BE IN THE HARD DRIVE.

Here are 5 of FREE tools:
Windows Password recovery - Can retrieve forgotten admin and users' passwords in minutes. Safest possible option, does not write anything to hard drive.
http://www.loginrecovery.com
Petter Nordahl-Hagen's Offline NT Password & Registry Editor - A great boot CD/Floppy that can reset the local administrator's password.
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd
Openwall's John the Ripper - Good boot floppy with cracking capabilities.
John the Ripper 1.7.0.1
http://www.openwall.com/john/e/john171w.zip
EBCD – Emergency Boot CD - Bootable CD, intended for system recovery in the case of software or hardware faults.
http://www.simtel.net/product.download.mirrors.php?id=80024
Free Windows password-cracking tools are usually Linux boot disks that have NT file system (NTFS) drivers and software that will read the registry and rewrite the password hashes for any account including the Administrators. This process requires physical access to the console and an available floppy drive but it works like a charm! I've done it myself several times with no glitch or problem whatsoever.
If you just want to install XP:
Start the computer and set it to boot from CD, the let then XP disc install. To set the boot order, start the computer, press whatever button you are told if you want to enter setup, it may be the DELETE or F2, you get a few seconds to do it. Then go to BOOT order and move the CD to the top, insert the CD, save your changes, exit setup, the CD will now take over.

uh... you can reformat without going into the administrator account, i dont know if the laptop can go into the bios settings but, if you could get into the bios settings, you can change the boot order in which your cd drive boots first before the hard drive and then save the changes and also do not touch the other settings besides the two switch around, be sure to be carefull in the boot settings because they are the most inportant settings in the computer.
then when your boot order is switch to be before the hard drive boot, you can restart computer but put the windows xp cd into the computer first and when your computer is booting, it will reach a black screen with (...), press space bar and then the computer will boot from cd, then you can find the other steps of reformating by figuring the rest out when you get there.
P.S: when reformating, be sure to delete the other partition to start a new one so have more space.

Use the chntpw utility. A guy by the name of Petter Nordahl-Hagen created a boot disk that boots you into Linux and allows you to change the admin password. I've used it a few times on Windows 2000 machines and it works like a charm.

Boot it up in safe mode, (push F8 before windows boots). Then go to the control panel to user accounts and add a new account with administrator privileges. I don't guarantee this will work but sometimes it does.

i don't know if this may work. if you have access to another computer and an external floppy driive (with floppy) you can go into control panel>>user accounts. create a new account with a password if you have to. go to prevent forgotton passwords, on the side. download the application with a new password. you may be able to use a CD-Rom but i'm not sure. i hope this works.

Leaving it on all day isn't inevitably undesirable; leaving it working with the lid close, whether, is yet another tale. Laptops do not deplete warmth besides while the lid is close, so in case you prefer to pass away it working then pass away it open besides. in case you place it in a laptop bag or case, consistently close it thoroughly off (close Down or Hibernate).

I'm no expert at administration by far, but I have managed to find this link for you:
http://www.infopackets.com/channels/en/windows/gazette/2003/20031030_reset_windows_2000_admin_password.htm
I can't guarantee it works, but hopefully you'll have some luck. If not, I'm afraid it may have to be a format and XP install, meaning you'd lose all your existing work.

Try this:
Turn off laptop
Restart in safe mode (F8 i think)
That should allow you to the hidden admin account.
From there you can change the password on your account
Restart
