How do I find out the true identity of the person who used a yahoo email address? As you know, Yahoo does not verify the information given to them before establishing an email address.

if you have witnesses who know who sent the email, then you could establish the person's identity with a preponderance of the evidence. You could contact yahoo and find out if they can tell you anything. If you retain a lawyer they can subpoena the information from yahoo, but it may be incorrect anyway. The best bet is to get some of those 35 witnesses and find out if they can verify who sent the email.

1. SAVE THE EMAIL 2. Obtain the records from Yahoo (Ask nicely/SUE) Sue as a last resort because Yahoo can cause great difficulties. The email will sometimes allow you to tracked back to a specific computer. (Its what all those hidden mysterious numbers in your email are for.) Then you can decide if you want to sue. Lets face it at some points it is better to cut your losses and run.

If you file a suit, Yahoo has to release the information. It may be false, but the information that can be released also includes tracking info that can be used to find the personal ISP account from which the letter was sent. Yes, they can trace the machine it came from.

Talk to your lawyer. If you lodge a defamation lawsuit, the court might order that Yahoo! release the info, and they can't refuse THAT.
