Two types: Hard Boot (also called cold boot), turn off machine completely.
Soft Boot, (also called Hot Boot) alt-ctrl-delete. This will bring up 'task manager' and you can 'end task' here w/o shutting down entire system.

Two ways:-
Hard reboot: Press the reboot button on the cabinet. Its not a very good way to do, but if your PC freezes to respond then this is the only way
Soft Reboot: Click Start-> Turn Off->Restart

xp>start>turn off>restart. or start>turn off/shut down> restart.
or start>shut down>shut down. Then back to on button.
If all else fails because you are frozen like a big dog, turn off the power source, (you know, like unplug). wait 15 or 20 seconds and turn it back on. Do not do this last method unless you have to. If you are using windows '98 or '98SE it will run scan disc after the cold boot as it is called.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
