I have a few professors whom I would like to say "thank you" to for Christmas by giving them gifts. Can you give me some advice on what kinds of creative, thoughtful, and appropriate gifts I can purchase? (please exclude home-made gifts, crafts, and baking;I don't have time for that because I have finals!)

These professors have been my mentors ever since I started college, and I will most likely be in their classes/independent studies till I am finished with graduate school.

I am a professor myself, and at first thought, I would say that you should not give gifts to your professors. In fact, school policy may even prohibit them from accepting gifts from students. You could put them in an incomfortable situation. You say that they have all been mentors, but typically only one professor would be considered a mentor. This makes me wonder whether they feel the same way ... I would be very careful. Once you are in graduate school, if you write a thesis and have a thesis director, then you could give that person a small thank-you gift. But at this point, I recommend against it.

I am going to have to agree that it is not appropriate unless you are working with them and they are not giving you grades. I would suggest you give them a thank you, or possibly pick up something from the bakery for them, like some cookies. However, I would be very cautious about this because if other students see it then the prof can get into some trouble with the dept. head, depending on what the gift is. If you are hell-bent on getting a gift, try going to the book store and finding a nice mug with the school's logo on it for them. I would def watch the price though, anything expensive might not be accepted.

It is not generally appropriate for students to give professors Christmas gifts. Give them a card or a note if you like, but leave it at that. Otherwise it may not look good. There may even be a school policy about professors not accepting gifts from students.

Unless you are a grad student working for them it's inappropriate. A sincere thank you card is much better.

I usually get my teacher a giftcard to Starbucks. So if you see your teacher drinking coffee then thats a good idea. A good book is really good too. Or maybe something special to add to their room.
