explain how the following passage is an example of irony

"And one disdainful suitor added this: May his fortune grow an inch for every inch he bends it!"

It is ironic because if he becomes to bend your fortune means you test your luck. So every time you test your luck you gain more fortune.

its obvious, each time ur fortune grows, the worse it gets (such as bank ropt)
