The dollar is currently worth about 1.9 Great British Pounds.(London is a city in Great Britain) so 400 US $ are worth about 205 British Pounds.
If you used your 400 dollars at MacDonald's you could buy 129 Big Macs. That same 400 dollars converted to Pounds would buy you only 105 big Macs

A friend of mine in England wrote and said that the pounds that they earn over there, go a lot further for their bills in the United States than the money they were making in the United States. And the U.S. Currency they took over there didn't go as far as the money they earn. In fact, there are tons of travel agency ads in England for people to fly to the US to buy Christmas gifts.

So NO, it is not better.

At the moment $5 is worth £2.50. You will be able to buy the following: 1 shot of spirit drink, "Hello" or "OK" magazine (Celebrity New etc), Pre-packed sandwich, medium coffee. These are just averages, everything will be different depending on the shop or area. Things in London will be more expensive than things in the countryside.
