There are numerous reasons this could be happening. The easiest way to check this is to got to the control panel and check your power options. Make sure the settings aren't set to turn off too fast. If you are using a laptop, the battery could be dying. Or the worst case scenario is that the CPU temp has gotten too hot, and it shuts itself down.

Computer Guy is on the right track. Check operation of all fans. But additionally, check for dust around and on the CPU fan and heatsink. The heatsink really does become a dust bunny haven. Blow this out with a can of pressurized air. Do the same around the air vents for all fans in the case. While you are there blow out the memory DIMMS and anywhere else you may see those sneaky wabbits! This should be done at least twice a year. Installing the hardware yourself shouldn't make a difference. Hopefully you didn't touch any chips on the motherboard. Static electricity kills (chips). This could also be an OS or registry problem. First try looking at all the system drivers (you didn't mention your OS, but in XP, it would be control panel --> performance and maintenance --> system --> hardware --> device manager for any question marks beside the hardware. Reinstall drivers if you find a question mark or exclamation mark (denotes a problem). If the hardware drivers look fine, either run an OS doctor program or reinstall you windows OS. Did you find the problem with your old harddrive? Does it work on another machine? Such a failure could be the drive. There is a chance it could be your motherboard - unrepairable.

Kay,

These may sound like silly questions, but please play along with me for a moment.

Could you please answer the following questions for me?

1) Does the machine go through a shut-down sequence, or is it
as if the power is just completely cut?

2) Is this a PC or a Laptop?
(Can you give make a model details)

3) Has the machine been moved from on location to another
recently? (Only applies if it's a PC, not a laptop)

4) How long would you guess the machine stays on before this
'power off mode' happens? Is it completely random or around
the same each time?

5) Has your machine been to a repair store or has anyone
installed anything for you recently?
(More RAM, a new hard-drive or graphics card, anything)

I hope I'm not asking too much here, I'd just like to rule a few things out and help you sort your issue.

Are you using Windows?

Power-saving off mode is completely customizable, but usually, it is preset to hibernate. Did it hibernate, or did it shut down completely? If it hibernated, when you turned on your computer, everything should have been the way it was when it turned off.

If it is turning off all the way, right click the battery/adapter icon and choose adjust power properties. Go to Alarms and choose Alarm action on critical battery. See what the alarm off action is. (If that box isn't checked, then there's the problem.) Choose Hibernate from the drop down menu. To make sure that the computer shuts down in time, check the box below that option. It will force the computer to shut down, even if a program is requesting attention.

can change it in the power settings in the control panel. normally it only switchs off when u not using it for a set period of time. if ur using a laptop then it has diffrent settings for the battery to the power mains. (battery normaly set to less power etc to save battery ie meaning power saving will happen sooner then normal)
how about just switching the power saving off cuz it is a pain in the back side.
if ur comp just swictchin it self off neways then it might be buggerd or some1 hacking spying with you. or u got a bad virus.

if its a laptop make sure its always plugged in.

Or right click on the desktop and press properties. Then screensaver and then power. Turn off all power saving things.

hope this helps
