They haven't abandoned the American people. They are just trying to keep the status quo. Ask the rich to see whether they feel as if they have been abandoned. I think you'll get a surprising answer.
The system is made to keep the rich rich, and the poor poor. They have done a fantastic job of that in the past 6 years.
If you start a new political party, you will be joining the ranks of other unknown 3rd parties. Obviously, you haven't heard of the great success that Green Party, or the Libertarian Party has had against the 2 party system. (I'm being sarcastic.) You'll just be wasting a lot of time and effort.
The best thing you can do is let your voice be heard. Vote. Convince others to vote as well. Non-involvement and indifference breeds corruption and misrepresentation.

Yeah, that pretty well sums it up. They are even starting off the new congress with a 'closed session' usually reserved for national emergencies. I can only assume the are saying 'if you do this for us we as a body agree to do that for you and if we do it fast enough it will be done before the public can raise a fuss and you can bat your eyelashes and pretend you would have done differently "if only you knew" how your constituents felt.'
I'm going to change my registration to independant. Lou Dobbs (whom I've never watched, but have read) suggested it as a way to get attention and show things are not politics as usual. The theory is that if we all suddenly change registration, it will be clear something is up. And it isn't as difficult as voting for a person you think might draw just enough votes to let the worse of two choices win.
However, I am going to vote independantly as well. Look at the person. There are conservative democrats I like a lot better than McCain and the globalist Republicans, although at the moment I am still technically a Republican, by registration.
And keep asking questions like these. The internet is our friend. Many politicians still count on our only seeing stories they feed to the press, barring a plane crash or other momentous event. There is a lot of information and there are a lot of forums to share it in.

It is not really the republican or democrat party that have abadoned the American people. It is those in power that have abadoned us. There should be stricktly enforced term limits for all those in power, then mabey more of the Americans who really do care about this country would come into power.

There are already thousands of other political parties, they simply don't get enough press. Look around, find one of them, and become a very vocal proponent of their policies and send them millions of dollars so that their messages can reach the ears of every registered voter in America.
If you want to start your own political party, you're going to need some charisma, some intelligence, and tons of money!
Good Luck, now get out there and find yourself a soapbox!

Republicans and Democrats haven't abandoned the American people because they are the American people. That's just stupid. Also we don't need anymore parties. If you disagree then just don't be in either party. There are plenty of other parties.

Both are corrupt, and a new party should be forged at the ashes of these aging giants. They only work for the rich - they should work for the people.

Libertarian, green,Communist, socialist. There is a party that you fit into. The best thing is to do away with them all together. Have one American party.
