The Hardy Boy's has a ton of books for grammar school readers in most libraries. Another series that we have read recently are the Dragons of DelTora by Emily Rodda. Encyclopedia Brown have many stand alone books but it is a series and of course the Narnia collection of seven by C.S.Lewis
Really check out some of the newer series some are just odd.
The humor is low and not that funny but they are popular. You should really need to read the books before he does to determine if its something you really want him to read. Too many parents just buy whatever and dont' realize the influence its making on their child.

I am a reading specialist in the elementary grades and the kids love "The Magic Tree House". There are at least 100 of them. n

I dug the animorphs around that age, I think, but I had an exceptionally high reading level, so you might want to hold off a couple years? I don't know. Goosebumps was really popular at that age, I remember.

Harry Potter is fun. Also, Chronicles of Narnia are a good way to introduce kids to Christianity- if you swing that way.
