They are looking for suckers everyday.Its not a matter of getting a job with a class A. Its finding one you like.If you like long trips and gone for days at a time with layovers and dock workers that treat you like crap then go for it.The money is ok but man they work you to the bone.start off local or a small region at first. If you want to be home every night then do containers(ports)they pay decent enough and its easy work(off most weekends too) within a week or two you will know the ports like the back of your hand.try to get a company that does a lot of back loads(you will bob tail home a lot) so you can double your pay somtimes. been there and done that (oakland CA ports, LTL,REFER CA.OR.WA)

There's a BIG demand for truckers. If you have a Class A license you'll have a job. If you plan to stay in the Orlando area, call up one of the companies there and ask. It's no secret how they pay. They don't pay more because you've been driving 20 years, they pay more because you can drive alone or when you own your own truck, pay for your own maintenance, etc. They should tell you over the phone, if they don't call someone else. I'd even be nasty and ask what they're hiding.
As with most things trucking is different in Florida than in other states. A few ex military pals of mine in Tampa have moved to other states to make more money. You can't haul oranges out of Florida in the same truck you used ot bring in cars, so a lot of the work in Florida is only daytrips or one night at best. Places like Publix have their own fleet, because they couldn't afford to pay someone from another state to deliver here.

In Fla. the best way to a cdl is through COM-CAR as they have a free school and every type of over the road truck going -commercial carriers (flat beds) md transport(reefer) ctl(tankers) they have local and long haul too-I got my cdl with them and they had plenty of work but the trucks were slow and cheap ,but if you can tough it out for a year it sure beats the heck out of oweing a student loan or one of the MAJOR carriers $4000 bucks for 3 or more years . If you are single and live in the truck you can bank $500.00 EVERY WEEK if you are not single then you will be effectivly maintaining 2 households and you will need to manage your money and KEEP THOSE WHEELS ROLLIN'. I was a single driver for INDIAN RIVER after I did my one year at CTL and I loved it .I spent money on the company truck (I can here the naysayers now!) had the BIG RADIO ,even bought the scan tool to turn it up to 92mph (gotta love those CAT 3406) Trucking is what you make it and it is A LIFESTYLE choice,make no mistake it will get in your blood-in more ways than one too! You will meet some of the FINEST HUMAN BEINGS on earth for 5 or 6 hours on the road and if you are lucky you might enjoy a meal with them but more than likely the next interchange on "THE BIG ROAD" will take them away. Safety "NAZI'S" (like that witch JOAN CLAYBROOKS and her but buddy NADER) along with the QUAL-COMM and new logging regulations have teamed up with TYPE 2 DIABETES to thin the heard of the "OUTLAW" trucker (a group to wich I still belong) .After the second $400.00 log book violation I rasied the white flag and moved on-Do I miss it -sometimes more than you can imagine (80,000 pounds @ 90 mph is pretty heady stuff) ! It was not uncommon to earn $500.00 in an 18 hour period with two or MORE log books-lol Just remember there are 3 types of drivers ,DRIVERS, CHICKEN HAULERS and ROOSTER CRUZERS (I never made it to ROOSTER CRUZER but for a company truck I think I was a pretty fair CHICKEN HAULER-LOL)

u arent gonna make a lot of money w werner, covenant, jb hunt, swift (nothin swift about em), ect.
the problem is u arent gonna make a lot of money for a while when u 1st get your cdl, cuz anyone paying good wants experience. usually 2 to 3 years for starters. if you want local work, ltl is probably your best bet.
for a lot of people the schools the only way for em to start. i got lucky and started w a company that helped me get mine w no contracts signed. didnt make good money, but all local work.
i tried otr. always wanted to n things fell into place as far as the job offer, my girl n me breaking up, n having a roommate to take care of my animals. i still cant tell u why, but i couldnt stand it. i made good money n wasnt even out for more than a week at a time, got good runs n all, but just hated being away from home. make sure its for u before u sign any contracts. dont just figure youre the kind of person thats cut out for life on the road, know it.

I drive mail truck for a private contractor, I make $20.00 per hour with a 24 foot straight with air brakes no hazmat to contend with, home every night, you must go through an f.b.i. background check, if there is something in your background tell them if they find out afterwards your gone. the scheduals are tight and they are always looking for ways to make them tighter. no real hassle other than scheduals.

Hi there,Im not a driver but a truckers wife and many of my friends are also drivers.It depends what their starting rate is.Im gonna guess .28 cents to 32 cents a mile.I might be off a little but not far from it.
