Henry Thoreau was a part of this writer's community along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and a few others in New England. He and his writer pals had theories, and Thoreau wanted to delve into the theory of simplicity and back to nature.

I'm not to sure but I think I recall from my Eng. Lit. that he wrote Walden Pond as an ojection to paying Income & Property taxes to support a government (U.S.)he prefered not to participate in. That his property should be considered his own private domain seperate from the govt's. juricediction.
