first, your resistor for the fan motor needs to be replaced, that is why it does not function in the first 2 fan positions. Second your fan motor bearings are worn out, that is the reason for the high pitch squeal. the fan motor would also have to be replaced.

I wish I had more of an actual answer for you. I just happen to have a similar problem- just in the later stages. I also have a 1997 Grand Prix. My heater and A/C used to work on the top two levels. There was a little squealing associated with that, but it's turned into a full blown rumbling and it's really loud. My A/C doesn't blow out any cold air, either.
Hopefully you can get you system fixed before you end up where I am! Good luck!

heater not blowing but still hot air? its your blower motor, needs replacing. Usually cheap and fairly easy depending on how accessable it is. Its usually against the firewall. High pitched squealing is probably a bad belt or a belt that needs adjusting. If you push on a belt with your finger and there's more than half an inch of give, it needs to be tightened. On one of the pulleys there will be a bolt running paralell to the pulley. Rightie tightie will fix that, or leftie loosie will loosen it up enough to replace it. it moves in small incriments, so be paitient. As for the key, i'm not so sure. You shouldnt have a key release switch on the top of the steering column on that car. I dont think pontiacs have those. I wish i could tell you something other than make sure the shifter is all the way in park. maybe jiggle shifter and mess with key at same time. Good luck

If the fan works - or at least you can hear it trying to work - on the lower speeds it is not the resistor. If that fails the blower motor will only run at all on the highest speed setting. The fact that the blower makes a wierd loud noise tells everything you need to know - you need a new blower, the bearings in it are shot.
