If you try to cash it, they will most likely tell you that there has been a stop payment on it. They won't arrest you or anything like that.
It is important to note that if someone puts a stop payment on the check they are required to tell the person who has the check that they did that. Otherwise the person who put the stop payment on the check coudl be charged with fraud.
A little known fact -- banks often screw up the stop payment process, and let the check go through. So if you put a stop payment on somethign with the bank, make sure to keep all the documentation on it so that if they mess up and pay it you have a shot at getting your money back from them.

First of all the banks do not screw up the stop payments it can take 24 to 48 hours for a stop payment request to take place. Secondly, the check will not be cashed so it is pretty much just a worthless piece of paper.

The bank certainly may cash the check for you, but when they find out there is a stop payment the bank will deduct the amount from your account

it will be returned to the bank as a stop payment and the bank will not pay the check...in other words, the check will not clear.( you won't get the money) go to the deadbeat who stopped the check and ask for cash.

First of all the bank won't cash it, if the stop pmt has already went through. Or YOU will be responsible for the amt. of the check and over draft fee.

you make SURE that the drivers license of the person who gave you the check, is written on the top of the check. this way, if the check bounces because of stop payment or insuficient funds, all you do is go to the police and sign a complaint.
This person is going to feel some trouble when the cops show at his place with an arrest warrant and trust me he will find the money ASAP before going to the"big house".
