HP hands down.
When you are ready to buy a new system, go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them, and everything is Vista ready.
Microsoft is about to release its latest operating system, Vista, in January. It’s going to make all of these “bargain” computers nothing but JUNK as soon as it’s released. The reason that you are seeing so many cheap systems on the market right now is because a lot of them CAN’T RUN Vista and the merchants are trying to dump them as hard and fast as they can before Vista shows up and everyone learns what a piece of crap they were sold for $500 (or whatever).
Anyway, I bought a complete, new system from stupidcheapcomputers.net with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the manufacturer. You can use my frequent buyer code: ATX926. That will get an additional 10% discount at checkout.
I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me and their customer service is outstanding. Those guys blow my mind.
Good luck!

First off Laptops ARE NOT slower it just depends on what kind of CPU (Computer Brain) that the Laptops have (The same goes for desktops) , if his laptop is slow tell him that he should 1., defrag his harddrive, get a program such a IoLO system mechanic 6 as it has tons of ultilies that will help him boost his performance and help squeeze every last bit of juice out of his laptop
If this does not work , tell him that getting a dell or toshiba are two good choices
But if you have the cash i recommend you getting a laptop from Falcon Northwest , (http://www.falcon-nw.com)
the reason i am suggesting this company is because they have TOP, KNOWLEDGEABLE Tech support and if they can not resolve the problem over the phone for some odd reason , they will personally send some one to your house and pick it up for OVER NIGHT SHIPPING!!
and your laptop will come back one or two days after
And if you dont want to get a Laptop from Falcon - Northwest
I suggest you use this tool to help you research which company and type of laptop to get ...it 's a website actually , and it is named (http://www.Resellersratings.com)
it is a place where fellow computer uses review and rate various products ,services and companies\ shops
Hope this helps,
J.D.

Sony has very poor customer service. Hp is working hard to improve in this area. I'd say definitely go with Hp if its slow its because of the processor speed youve purchased. Not the company name.

i'm a retired pc Tech with the NM State Police. We used all of those manufacturers. i will say that the Dell had the fewest ailment returns and provides the ideal bang for the dollar! you like a unit that's especially designed for gaming and multimedia. the backside fee in any of those won't unavoidably carry out as you like. flow with the main helpful processor, a P4 no longer Celeron and get an entire gig of memory. additionally the better the front Bus velocity (FSB) the speedier the aspects refer to the processor!
