Why does Pinochet still have so many supporters in Chile today despite the fact that he murdered more than 3000 people and was convicted of fraud and arms dealing. Why are some people genuinely happy at the thought that students and union leaders were brutally murdered by the DINA, why is there no consensus on this tragedy?

People are killed by their governments everyday. Governments will naturally try to protect themselves from the people that they deemed an enemy. Newer or different does not make better.

Its Pinochet modernize Chile economy is one factor. Another factor is there some people got very wealthy under Pinochet, and chose to disregard of killings of thousands of people opposed to Pinochet. Pinochet will go down as a thug in the history books, but also Allende destroyed the economy by nationalizing the most productive sectors of the economy something which Brazil, and Mexico did not dare to perform during the late 1960s.
DINA was a thug organization that look for lefties, progressives at every street corner, but also Allende nationalize the most productive sectors of the economy and the people were on the brink of starvation in early 1970s. Pinochet was a thug, and pro badly will go on in the history book like a mini Franco fascist. The right-wing today in Latin America is more moderate today than in past as is the left wing because prefer stability over drastic upheavals every time a new person rules. Moderation is key to stability, and the right , left, center know it now. Overtime, less thugs will rule the world because of Internet, and public information so much more open that leaders now that rule the world will held accountable now where in the past they got off with a clean slate.

Pinochet has so many supporters in Chile because so many of them lived through the deprivations of the Allende years. They have the freedom to see how the Marxist dream continues in Cuba because the Pinochet coup prevented Allende from closing down the respected 'el mecurio' newspaper.

Those on the extreme right are usually not concerned with the fate of those they consider their enemies (such as students and labor leaders). They have strong convictions that they, and only they, are right about everything and that those who oppose then are wrong and deserve punishment. They are rigid in their thinking and will probably always feel Pinochet was a great leader.

If you really want to know you will have to analyze 33 years of history, but luckily for you there are geeks like me that have done this already. Check my blog where I explain some interesting points of view about the Chilean extreme right, or as I call them: The Pinochetists.
