Almost everyone in the world today has heard the word Jihad, thanks to the media. This word has a very broad meaning and does not mean 'Holy War' as many people believe.

The meaning of the word Jihad is 'Striving'.It applies to any sort of activity made by any person because of love of God.It covers every aspect of a muslim's life. It is Jihad when a muslim is called upon to make an extra effort - for example, to get up before dawn in order to pray, to fast during Ramadan abstaining from all the things which would invalidate the fast.It is jihad when a person helps another, and goes out of their way to be a friend etc (the intention being to please God alone and not for anything else, if it is done with any other motive, it is NOT Jihad). For example, a person can lay down his life for his country without being religious at all - this is NOT Jihad.

It is reported that the Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him) said: *"The most excellent jihad is that for the conquest of oneself." The soul is tempted to do certain things which are prohibited(haraam) at times and a person who strives to eradicate such thoughts and seeks refuge with God is doing Jihad by controlling his/her desires.

Actually you are right and Wrong...

ji·had [ji-hahd] Pronunciation Key
–noun
1.a holy war undertaken as a sacred duty by Muslims.
2.any vigorous, emotional crusade for an idea or principle.
Also, jehad.

Islam An individual's striving for spiritual self-perfection.
Islam A Muslim holy war or spiritual struggle against infidels.
A crusade or struggle: "The war against smoking is turning into a jihad against people who smoke" (

[Arabic jihād, from jahada, to strive; see ghd in Semitic roots.]

n 1: a holy war waged by Muslims against infidels [syn: jehad, international jihad]

2: a holy struggle or striving by a Muslim for a moral or spiritual or political goal [syn: jehad]

Also Jihad is a noun.. making it a person, place or thing.... "striving" is not a person, place, or thing.. it is an emotion

not a bad explanation. jihad is what alot of muslim women are doing in america and around the world.....keeping theirselves covered w/ hijab or niqab. its a struggle. everyone does jihad everyday. keeping ur loved ones happy...for some its hard. their is so much . so jihad does NOT mean holy war. take care and may allah guide us all.

There's often a huge difference between what people DO and what they SAY.

Jihad is an excellent example. It is almost always a violent, unthinking, uncompromising assault against others in the name of religion. Yet, at the same time, the assailants are whining that they are peaceful.

Go figure.
